~Eating Magic~

I'm reading Garden of Eden, The Legend of Eden Book 1 by Kate Cowan. It's kind of a dystopia horror island story, but it begins in an lollipop-shaped attic. What's interesting about the novel is that once you think you've hit a wall of predictability in the plot, on the next page the wall comes down. There are themes and motifs that have been done thousands of times before: Children locked away in dungeons and labs, drugged, trained, threatened, and hunted depending on the day. Yet they're tossed together in the salad bowl of this novel in an organic way.

It's a first book in a series, so many doors are opened and nothing is really closed. The main thing is: Eden wants more of a life than being locked away in castles, towers, attics, and dungeons, or being told not to go out into the woods. Something she does, every chance she gets.

There's a psychedelic quality to the plot that's refreshing. It's an easy read with a nice pace. Eden is likable… perhaps the most likable when she's persuading ice queen Adriane to train her into becoming something more tough and battle ready.

The most unusual story element is Liddon, a magician Eden stumbles upon in that forbidden forest…

I walked toward the spot where the noise had come from, curious to see if I was truly hearing things. But as I neared, I realized with a chill that the woods were not as empty as I had assumed. And then again, clearer this time, the laughter rang out again.

I first glimpsed the man as I hid behind a thick tree trunk. It was a sycamore, with dense branches low enough so I could climb them with no trouble. I started scaling it as quietly as I could, my muscles still aching from my training with Adriane. I don't think it would have mattered if I'd thrown a grenade at this man—he wouldn't have noticed. If I had ever thought I was insane, I was sorely mistaken. This is what insanity looked like.

From my vantage point high in the tree, I studied the man. He was tall; one of the tallest people I had ever seen, and maybe in his mid-thities. He wore a bright pink and purple striped suit jacket, with an orange collared shirt underneath, and a tie that hung just half-tied, as if he had once been ready for a very colorful formal event. His pants were old, torn and pink, to match his jacket. On his head he wore a furry lime-green bowler's cap, which seemed to exist only to hold his mass of wild, shoulder-length brown curls.

He danced like a wild man around a tiny fire, and I noticed a little monkey perched on his shoulder, and a huge, bright blue bird flying through the air around his head.

About the Author 

Kate is an artist, an animation student, a black belt in karate and now, an author. She didn't discover writing until mid-high school, when she began writing an (unintentionally) hilarious novel involving a teenage girl and a magic necklace. Her current novel series, The Legend of Eden, began as a story of Arthurian magic, but quickly transformed into something much different.

Kate currently lives in Ontario, Canada, in a zoo of a house. When she isn't writing, she's drawing, cooking, or browsing the Internet for new music.

The Treasures of Depth Psychology

I'm reading Persephone Returns by Tanya Wilkinson Ph.d. It's so wonderful. It's like eating all the candy and cake and ice cream that I want without ever getting fat or full. So really, it's not junk, it's completely nourishing, soul-filling, and oh, so delicious.

It's been a long time since I've indulged in any Jungian inspired/depth psychology books. I used to read them all the time, even though some of the concepts were hard for me to grasp. Archetypal defense systems. The negatively constellated numinosum. The omnipotent apocalyptic God subpersonality. Yep. As a lay person, with zero psychological training, some of it was just beyond my ability to truly comprehend. Also—often—I'd love the first few chapters and then the books would devolve into  an analysis of an analysis of an analysis. Although very Jungian, very abstract stuff and, for me,  not very fulfilling.

I like my depth psychology connected to the body. Affect. When it becomes too much of the mind—logos—it just loses me. Wilkinson has not only kept everything connected to the body in Persephone Returns, she's made it about being connected to the body. Her main theme is the Victim Psyche. By contrasting the Hero Mythology with that of the Goddess Persophone, she illustrates the stranglehold the Hero has on the modern-day psyche—to our detriment.

Descent is necessary for us all. Jung would say that, more eloquently, with an entire book. Well, probably about twenty-nine entire books. A lot to slog through.

Wilkinson makes her case in a single nice neat one, about eight chapters. Why we must descend and claim our crowns in the Underworld. (If you've read any of the books in the Daughter of Light trilogy, you're probably starting to click to Melia's journey, it's very much a journey of trying to be the hero and failing miserably because she's not connected to the power of her chthonic—love that word—: archetypal  underworld energy.) After discussing the Hero and Persephone, Wilkinson continues on to illustrate her points with fairytales, (oh, be still my beating heart!) "The Beauty and the Beast" and other lesser known ones.

Persephone Returns is an accessible window into the treasures of depth psychology and I highly recommend it if you're ready to make your own descent… and discover the liminal within you.

I met Joy through Goodreads. If I had to describe her blog, thoughts by j, in one word, it would be elegant. Swing by her place and you'll see what I mean.

1. Please, Introduce yourself.
I'm Joy, and I'm a 20 year old book blogger from Sydney, Australia! I'm currently studying media in university, and hopefully will be able to work for Bloomsbury one day. Fingers crossed! 

2. Coffee or Tea or Water? Espresso, Drip, Instant, or French Press? Bag or Looseleaf? Bottled, Filtered, Tap or Rainwater?
I love tea and coffee. I usually go for Earl Grey in the mornings and never fail to drink at least one cup of tea a day. When I'm out and about, I usually grab coffee. There's a great coffee cart at my uni where the best caramel lattes I've ever tasted are sold. I am a sucker for their coffees. Fun fact: My first job was at a cafe, where I was able to drink as many coffees as I wanted. I'm not sure if it's because I've had too many coffees in my short life-time, but instead of waking me up, drinking coffee puts me to sleep!

3. Why do you blog about books?
I love reading, simple as that. I never did blog, but as a media student I needed a platform to fine-tune my writing. Starting a book blog sounded like the perfect way to incorporate these two hobbies! 

4.What inspired the design of your site?
I wanted a more sophisticated feel to my website - something similar to how a digital magazine website would look like. I like really neat designs, as it gives off a hint of professionalism (ha!). I'm always a little weary of websites that are too cluttered, so I tried to keep that in mind when choosing my themes. 

5. What is your favorite thing about book blogging?
Meeting all the wonderful people in the industry! I've definitely met some wonderful bloggers, authors and aspiring writers during my short time blogging. It's wonderful to share your thoughts, ideas and opinions with like-minded people all over the world!

6. How do you decide which books to read?
When I'm really busy, I usually pick books that are shorter in length. I hate reading sporadically, starting a book and not finishing it for ages. Unfortunately, this happens much too often. When I get book review requests, I usually bump these up to the front of my TBR list. I am always grateful to any authors that take the time out to contact me, so I'm always more than willingly to choose to read their books first.

7. How much time do you invest reading and blogging?
Unfortunately not enough ever since uni resumed. I just came out of a four months holiday, where I had plenty to time to read and blog every week. Now I am swamped with course work, a part-time job, extra-curriculars and sports on the weekends. I can barely find the time to sit down a enjoy some quality reading time. This is really disappointing, but I'm trying my best to rectify this.

8. Care to comment on the Alice Hoffman quote: Books may well be the only magic?
I wouldn't say the ONLY magic. Magic is whatever you make of it - there are magicians worldwide that can perform amazing feats and I definitely consider them magical. Books are in a completely different realm altogether though. What I believe Alice Hoffman meant is that books are the only form of magic that is able to transport you to a different place, metaphorically speaking. Reading is the only way that you can really shut out your own life and follow the wonderful adventures of the characters that you're reading about. It may not be the only magic, but it is definitely magical.

9. On a scale of 1-10, how eccentric are you? 10 being VERY…
Haha, I would love to say I am wild and eccentric, but I probably only sit at around a 2 on the scale. :P

Good and Bad Have Long Tails...

Of the three books I'm reading, Oscar Wilde's The Complete Fairy Tales feels the most prosaic. Qualification: I am not done yet. The allusion to christ in The Selfish Giant feels maudlin, while the inviolate boundaries drawn between good and bad in The Devoted Friend feel tedious.

Good and Bad have long tails. Tales that grab the middle, and attest only to the pendulum's extreme swings deny deeper truths. It's not so much that everything is relative....

It's much more that this leads to that and that leads to this, and addressing a partial continuum in moral absolutes feels hollow.

But Wilde wrote his fairy tales ages ago. Perhaps, I can forgive him for being a man, somewhat of his times.

When I was a child...

We had a Hans Christian Anderson Fairy Tale collection (printed) and an LP of The Brothers Grimm. I wore that LP out. The book of fairy tales was more dangerous, and lingering. Things we were not allowed to discuss in my home--anger, envy, betrayal--laced those stories.

I kept quiet about those things. And held my breath.

Because those enchanted tales held out hope for a future where the truth might be set free, and I might be able to breathe.
